A quality landscape project is not possible without the men and women that guide it along the way. The dedicated staff at Rolling Acres bring with them a passion and unique understanding that separates them from others in the industry. We’re a small team, which allows all of us to be hands on. But, we’re large enough, and with the experience required to handle the most challenging projects.
John Hyman, President:
John Hyman, Owner and President of Rolling Acres Landscape Construction and Specimen Nursery, started in the landscaping industry at the young age of 10 while attending Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC. He spent his free time mowing grass for friends and neighbors. As a teenager, he gained experience working during holidays and summers for his father’s residential construction company. He continued expanding his love of landscaping through high school. After graduating from Bethesda – Chevy Chase H.S. in 1981, Rolling Acres became John’s full-time endeavor, and has been ever since. His knowledge of the industry grew through personal experience and his relationships with several mentors, patriarchs of the local landscape industry, and landscape architects. John now enjoys working alongside his two sons and watching them carry on the legacy of the company he built. He is a member of the Maryland Nursery, Landscape, and Greenhouse Association.
Tucker Hyman, Sales and General Manager:
Tucker Hyman has worked with Rolling Acres Landscape Construction and Specimen Nursery for over fifteen years and is the second generation of the company. Tucker is invaluable to Rolling Acres because his work ethic and attention to detail cannot be beat. He makes it a priority to see that the RAL Team builds personal outdoor spaces that meet the specific needs of each client. Tucker ensures that even the smallest of details are accounted for. As General Manager, Tucker oversees the company’s day to day production. He is responsible for sales, client relations, construction of specialty projects, our fleet of vehicles, and the snow and ice division. Tucker holds a degree from Virginia Tech in Landscape Construction and is a member of the Maryland Nursery, Landscape, and Greenhouse Association. Tucker plans to continue his father’s legacy with the help of the RAL Team.
Brent Mercer, Project Manager:
Brent has been a vital member of the Rolling Acres team since 2015 when he began working as one of our Assistant Foreman. In a few years’ time, Brent’s hard-working attitude, knowledge, skill, and dedication, helped pave the way for his inevitable promotion to Project Manager. Before his time at Rolling Acres, Brent went to work directly out of high school at his parents plumbing company. Following his time in the plumbing industry, Brent started working construction. His responsibilities included time spent operating machinery, grading, and fabricating various components of custom built construction. Brent has been able to utilize these developed skills, as well as other hidden talents with Rolling Acres, and it shows. His knowledge of grading and drainage is profound, as well as his ability to build our custom designed fences, gates, and other features. Brent’s favorite aspect of working at RAL is being able to be hands on with clients and seeing the job transform from day to day. When all is said and done, Brent enjoys going home to spend some time with his wife, his baby girl Taylor, and their dog and horses.
Scott Freedman, Registered Landscape Architect, Certified Professional Horticulturist:
When Scott joined the Rolling Acres Team, it paired thoughtful design with the skills needed to see designs built right. This relationship has blossomed into a fun-loving new take on what is capable in the fields of Landscape Architecture. Scott started his foray into designing landscapes when he enrolled in West Virginia University’s Landscape Architecture program as a Freshman. Upon graduation in 2007, Scott transplanted himself to Tucson, Arizona and began work in residential design/build. After moving back to his home state of Maryland in 2010 to be closer to family, Scott continued doing what he enjoyed most, designing and seeing his projects built at the homes of his clients. When he is not working, Scott enjoys time spent with his wife Pam, his daughter Hailey, his son Ryan, and their dog Fletcher. In 2016, Scott passed his last test and became a Registered Landscape Architect. For more about Scott, please visit the first RAL blog, titled “In My Life”.
Elizabeth Gahles, Office Manager:
Having been Rolling Acres Office Manager for nearly five years, Elizabeth has an impeccable work ethic and organization that keeps our operation running smoothly. Elizabeth was born and raised in Montgomery County, and now raises her two children and three dogs just down the road from our shop. She is a product of a University of Maryland education (Go Terps!) and prior to her time at RAL she ran the operations of her family owned construction company for over 20 years. Her favorite part of working at Rolling Acres is getting to be a part of this close-knit group of people, and the family atmosphere that comes with it.
